{"id":6602,"date":"2021-11-29T21:30:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T20:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/en\/?p=6602"},"modified":"2024-01-29T10:29:25","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T09:29:25","slug":"expo-part-2-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/en\/expo-part-2-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Expo Part 2: History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the second part of the miniseries about Expo, you&#8217;ll learn more about the history of world exhibitions, their milestones and the near future.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/expo2-foto1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/expo2-foto1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8329\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paris Exposition 1889, photo via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arthurchandler.com\/paris-1889-exposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arthur Chandler<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of world exhibitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>According to <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_world%27s_fairs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>the list of world fairs<\/b><\/a><b>, the historically very first world exhibition was organized by Prague in 1791. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The industrial exhibition was on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II. as king of Bohemia, which took place in Clementinum and celebrated the considerable sophistication of manufacturing methods in the Czech lands in this period.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The French tradition of national exhibitions culminated with the French Industrial Exhibition of 1844 in Paris.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>In 1851, the World Expo, entitled &#8220;The Great Exhibition of Industrial Works of All Nations&#8221;, was held at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, United Kingdom.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Great Exhibition, as it&#8217;s often called, was the idea of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, and is usually considered the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It has influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art and design, international trade and relations and tourism. Three epochs can be distinguished:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the era of industrialization, the era of cultural exchange and the era of nation branding.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Industrialization (1851\u20131938)<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first era of &#8220;industrialization&#8221; covered the years 1800 to 1938. <\/span><b>In those days, the world expositions were mostly trade-oriented and displayed technological advances and inventions. World expositions were platforms for the latest science and technology from around the world.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The World Expositions 1851 London, 1853 New York, 1862 London, 1876 Philadelphia, 1878 Paris, 1888 Barcelona, 1889 Paris, 1891 Prague, 1893 Chicago, 1897 Brussels, 1900 Paris, 1904 St. Louis, 1915 San Francisco and 1933-34 Chicago were remarkable in this regard. <\/span><b>Inventions such as the telephone were first presented during this era. This era determined the basic character of the world fair.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/our-history-10.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/our-history-10.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8336\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Expo Philadelphia 1876, Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie-paris.org\/site\/en\/about-the-bie\/our-history#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIE Paris<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Cultural Exchange (1939\u20131987)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York World&#8217;s Fair of 1939\u201340 and those that followed took a different approach, one less focused on technology and <\/span><b>more focused on cultural issues and social progress.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, the theme of the 1939 fair was &#8220;Building the World of Tomorrow&#8221;. At the World&#8217;s Fair in New York in 1964\u201365, it was &#8220;Peace Through Understanding,&#8221; and at the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal, it was &#8220;Man and His World&#8221;. <\/span><b>These fairs have promoted effective intercultural communication together with sharing of technological innovations.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/800__0008_1939-ford-61.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/800__0008_1939-ford-61.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8351\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New York World&#8217;s Fair 1939, Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expo2020dubai.com\/en\/understanding-expo\/world-expos-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Expo 2020<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Nation branding (1988\u2013present)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Since the World Expo 88 in Brisbane, countries have begun to use the expositions as a platform to improve their national image through their pavilions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examples are Finland, Japan, Canada, France and Spain. A large study by Tjaco Walvis entitled &#8220;Expo 2000 Hanover in Numbers&#8221; showed that <\/span><b>improving national image was the main goal for 73% of the countries participating in Expo 2000.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The pavilions became a kind of advertising campaign and the Expo served as a means of &#8220;national branding&#8221;.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to branding expert Wally Olins, Spain used the Expo &#8217;92 and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona in the same year to highlight its new status as a modern and democratic country and to show itself as a prominent member of the European Union and the global community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1738486408-expo-2000-hannover-weltausstellung-Paf9.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1738486408-expo-2000-hannover-weltausstellung-Paf9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8340\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Expo 2000 Hannover, Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kreiszeitung.de\/lokales\/niedersachsen\/fs-expo-2000-784792.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kreiszeitung<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>At the Expo 2000 in Hanover, countries have created their own architectural pavilions, each investing an average of \u20ac12 million.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On account of these costs, governments sometimes hesitate to participate because the benefits may not justify the costs. Although the effects are difficult to measure, an independent study for the Dutch pavilion at Expo 2000 estimates that the pavilion (which cost around \u20ac35 million) generated potential revenues of around \u20ac350 million for the Dutch economy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2017-nur-alem-art-55.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2017-nur-alem-art-55.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8341\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Expo Astana 2017, photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie-paris.org\/site\/en\/2017-astana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIE Paris<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, organized the last Specialized Expo in 2017.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dubai in the United Arab Emirates currently hosts the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie-paris.org\/site\/en\/2020-dubai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expo 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which takes place from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. In February 2022, our company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bart.sk\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which creates digital products that improve life in the field of health, sports and e-commerce, will also have a video presentation in the thematic Health &amp; Wellness block.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/expo-2020-timeline-image.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bart.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/expo-2020-timeline-image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8342\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Expo Dubai 2020, photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expo2020dubai.com\/en\/understanding-expo\/world-expos-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Expo 2020<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The future of Expo<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Buenos Aires, Argentina,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was chosen to host the next <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expo_2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expo in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, announced its withdrawal without rescheduling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>In 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expo_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Expo will be held in Osaka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Japan. It will open on April 13, 2025 and end on October 13, 2025. This will be the third World Expo held in Osaka, before it was Expo 1970 and Expo 1990. The estimated number of visitors is approximately 28 million.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme of the exhibition is &#8220;Designing Future Society for Our Lives&#8221; with sub-themes of &#8220;Saving Lives&#8221;, &#8220;Empowering Lives&#8221; and &#8220;Connecting Lives&#8221;. The theme &#8220;Saving Lives&#8221; includes infant vaccinations, sanitation, lifestyle (diet and exercise) and extending life spans.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaga, Spain and the American state of Minnesota are<\/span><b> applying to host the World&#8217;s Fair in 2027\/2028<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Busan, Korea, five conferences were held to draw attention to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expo_2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bid and they submitted a proposal to the BIE to hold an exhibition on June 23, 2021. That year, Moscow (Russia) has also applied to host the World&#8217;s Fair.
